Originally founded in 1978 as a historical methodology group, the association was briefly named the International History of Nursing Society. Clendening History of Medicine Library & Museum - The Clendening History of Medicine Library and Museum is the rare books and manuscripts library of the University of Kansas Medical Center. The Library actively collects rare books as well as current works in the history of medicine, nursing, and the allied professions. The Library also supports the biomedical ethics and medical humanities curriculum by collecting contemporary secondary works in these areas. Under the auspices of its Museum, the Library also owns hundreds of medical artifacts.

Countway Library of Medicine - The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, one of the largest medical libraries in the world, serves the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston Medical Library and the Massachusetts Medical Society. The Countway Library holds more than 630,000 volumes, subscribes to 3,500 current journal titles and houses over 10,000 non-current biomedical journal titles. The library also houses one of the world's leading medical history collections, and provides access to many electronic information resources.

The Countway hosts The Center for the History of Medicine, which includes Archives and Records Management Program for the schools of the Harvard medical area, and the Warren Anatomical Museum.
