“History is HERstory too.”
A special project of the Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine
There are countless stories of women trailblazers in almost all facets of life. The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine exists to recognize and preserve the significant contributions women have made, over time, to the area of medicine and the medical sciences.
An Opportunity to Tell Your Story
One of the Foundation’s key objectives is to capture the stories of prominent women in medicine. This is currently being accomplished on a large scale through the Foundation’s Oral History Program. Because of the scope of these oral history projects, we realize that we may be missing stories, honors, experiences and triumphs that can be shared with our fellows, our student scholars, and our audience of women in medicine who look to the Foundation for the historical perspective on medical education, gender equality, career advancement, mentoring and leadership.
What Can Others Learn from You?
Do you have experiences or advice that would be of value to share with our fellows, student scholars, and the FHWIM community? Here is your opportunity to allow others to learn from your experiences. The process is easy and allows you to be creative. We will chose a topic, then you submit a story in writing, make an audio tape, include photos - whatever you feel will enhance your tale. If you are comfortable with the computer, use our online submission form. Digital photos are also encouraged. Our area of focus for this first round of stories answers the question:
“What were the major obstacles to your career advancement in
medicine and how did you overcome them?”
Once we receive enough submissions, we would like to compile these stories into an interactive presentation that can be shared with our fellows, scholars, and those interested in learning more about how women achieved success in medicine over the years. We hope to create a “story bank” of well-crafted materials. As a contributor, we would make this material available to you. Excerpts from the stories will be posted on our website and featured in FHWIM’s marketing materials. Please be sure to read and sign the release.
We have begun our book of stories... we hope you enjoy them. More will be posted as they come in.
Make an Impact
In addition to submitting your story, perhaps you would consider making a tax-deductible contribution to The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine to help us continue to create and deliver programs that preserve and promote the history of women in medicine such as our national recognition award named after a most notable woman surgeon, Alma Dea Morani, MD; the Foundation Research Fellowships that continue to provide support to those completing research in areas of women in medicine and women’s health; our annual student scholarship opportunities created through a gift from Maria Brabb MD; and the cutting edge oral history projects that create a “living history” from the stories provided by women physicians. Your support of The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine will help us survive the current economy with our programs not only intact, but thriving! We are counting on those who believe in and share our mission.
