The Trust Fund of the WMC/MCP Alumnae/i
Association charged an Ad Hoc Archives Committee
to develop strategies to secure the future of the
Allegheny University Archives and the Special Collections
on Women in Medicine. The Committee's recommendation
resulted in the establishment of The Foundation for
the History of Women in Medicine, an independent
501(c)(3) not for profit corporation, in the Fall
of 1998.
The Foundation attracted well known physicians,
historians, archivists and business leaders to
serve on its Board of Trustees and Honorary Board.
During the first three years of its existence,
much time was spent in watching the developments
with the Archives and Special Collections. Once
Drexel University bought the Medical School, the
Foundation considered that the treasured Archives
and Special Collections were safe from disposal
through bankruptcy settlements.
The Foundation then
turned its attention to developing alliances with
like-minded organizations to promote and preserve
the history of women in medicine and the medical
sciences. While the Foundation will continue to fund
projects for the Archives and Special Collections,
the Foundation will extend its support outside of
this single institution. |
